Two New Designs from Kilowatt Studio

The new year is starting off with a bang for Kilowatt Studio with two new designs from Gregory Kenny. This year will bring a focus on new design techniques and keeping things green and sustainable while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic and high level of quality.

The first design is a commissioned item for a local client. The Slope takes a new angle on the traditional bookshelf, inspired by the slopes of Whistler Mountain. Constructed from walnut and white lacquered mdf.

The second new design is the product of an exciting new process that Greg is using in his work. He had this to say about it:

Although it looks like inlay the branch image is  actually a vector graphic I created using Adobe Illustrator. The image was then e- mailed to a large format printing house here in Vancouver and printed directly onto the wood. The printer is limited to a total thickness of 2" so the graphic had to be applied to the two pieces while laying flat and assembled and clear-coated after the printing process. This process allows me to dictate exact colour, size and opacity and has nudged me towards a more 21st century approach to my woodwork.

This product will be available soon on the Modern Karibou website.

The Culture Crawl is a festival that showcases artists in their studios from Main St to Commercial Drive and First Ave to the Waterfront in Vancouver's east side. It started informally in 1994 and has grown exponentially since then, adding more artists and attracting even more visitors each year.

The names range from emerging talent to internationally acclaimed artists. The Culture Crawl gives local Vancouver residents and visitors a chance to browse local galleries, find a piece (perhaps a unique Christmas gift?) or have something commissioned.

Nest and Pod beds for the modern cat

Do you want the same quality in a bed for your smallest, furriest family members that you would want in one that you were purchasing for yourself? The Nest and Pod beds were designed by Gregory Kenny of Kilowatt Studio for the cat owner who wants the best for their feline friend (or master) and who also want something that will complement their contemporary decor.

Their unique, modern design sets them apart from the average cat bed that you will find on the shelves of pet stores and you will also notice a huge difference in quality and workmanship. Each bed is hand crafted from wool here in Vancouver, so you get the benefit of purchasing a locally produced item that is going to be vastly different from the fabric covered foam beds that most owners have, as well as a product of excellent quality.

The materials used for each bed were researched extensively and wool was the clear choice. The best feature about wool is that it does not support the growth of dust mites and it is also resistant to bacteria, mould, and mildew. So not to worry if your feline or human family members suffer from allergies, wool's hypoallergenic properties will help to keep them comfortable. Wool also has excellent flexible strength, so the Nest and Pod beds are guaranteed to outlast those other mass-produced chunks of foam.

If you want a gorgeous, modern bed that will look great in the living room and that is built to the highest quality you need look no further than the Nest and Pod from Kilowatt Studio. Another great feature: 10% from the sale of each bed goes to support the Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association, a wonderful local group that rescues cats in need and gives them a loving foster home until they find a new family. Visit the Kilowatt Studio website to see more details on the Nest and Pod beds for cats.
